Selene Wallet 2025
Description
Your Favorite Bitcoin Cash Wallet Selene Wallet is a self-custodial, open source, BCH-only mobile wallet that emphasizes a simple and accessible user experience without compromising on features that power users expect. We designed Selene Wallet with the goal of allowing anybody to go from zero-to-BCH-user as seamlessly as possible. Once a new BCH user is onboarded, the wallet can teach them what they need to know along the way! Only have 60 seconds to teach someone about Bitcoin Cash? Point them to Selene Wallet. The app downloads in seconds, and you can send them some BCH the moment they open the app for the first time. They’ll receive it instantly, and be amazed at the incredible speed and low barrier to entry! We aim to deliver a BCH experience that FEELS good, not just for seasoned BCH veterans, but also for people who are experiencing cryptocurrency for the first time. Our long-term vision for Selene Wallet is to provide the necessary tools that allow BCH to grow into the global reserve currency. First, 10,000,000 daily active users, then the whole world! Fundraiser Target: 424 BCH ($152,640 USD) Assumed BCH Price: $360 USD/BCH 2024 Retrospective and Review Overall, we're pleased with our results in 2024. Since releasing the Stats feature last July, there have been over 3600 unique devices that have opened Selene Wallet, with about 100 daily and 1000 monthly average users. We've done very little marketing or promotion overall - most of our users are gained by word of mouth. We see these stats as signs that we're on the right track, and we're excited for our next phase of growth. Let's review our 2024 deliverables: What did we deliver? Biometric/PIN authentication BIP70 Stats Coin Control CashTokens User manual (some) i18n improvements (but not the full scope of what we wanted) In addition, we accomplished some milestones that were not part of last year's Flipstarter targets: Availablity as a web wallet Critical performance, reliability, and scalability improvements UI improvements in response to user feedback Support for CashStamps/wallet sweep (in lieu of Shareable Link) What did we NOT deliver? We were unable to meet some of our promised deliverables within the 12 month timeframe: CashConnect/WalletConnect CashConnect and WalletConnect are the next priority items on our roadmap, now that we have support for CashTokens. We are aiming for WalletConnect support in time for BCH BLISS, with CashConnect support soon after. Dark Mode We are currently working with a design team to improve our color palette, which includes a Dark Mode palette. This will likely be finished and implemented within the next 30 days. Point of Sale (now "Vendor Mode") We've been focusing on making the user-focused wallet experience as complete as we can before pivoting to merchant-focused features. Meanwhile, Paytaca has competitively positioned themselves as the leader in BCH merchant adoption. We believe directly competing with their POS offering at this time is a redundant use of BCH community resources. We still have "Vendor Mode" on the roadmap, which is just a vendor-focused receive screen, and not a comprehensive POS implementation. Maps An excellent map implementation is a massive undertaking that requires tight coordination between many ecosystem participants. Veteran BCHers are well aware of "the Map problem." Entries go out of date, or are too highly localized, etc. Paytaca is able to solve the stale data problem via integration with their POS software, and they have the resources to support their local users. Our map integration would initially depend on Paytaca's. Overall, achieving our goals for a Map feature will take disproportionate time and effort compared to the anticipated benefits. However, we're still highly interested in growing the BCH Map ecosystem in the long term. Maps will remain a long-term roadmap target, but with no definitive timeframe for completion at this time. Shareable Link Somewhat obviated by our inclusion of CashStamps functionality. Truthfully, I (Kallisti) don't know how to do it without doing additional research; I've done enough research to know what I need to learn, but have prioritized other things instead of attempting an implementation. It's just a matter of spending the time on it, or paying someone to implement it for us. i18n improvements Our translation coverage has been improving over time, and we've made a few improvements like setting the default currency by locale. Ultimately, we want to set up a better platform for handling translator contributions and translation strings. We will soon be doing backend and infrastructure development for upcoming (unannounced) Selene products. We intend on exploring i18n platform options at that time. 2025 Roadmap and Deliverables For the next 12 months, we are targeting the following deliverables: CashConnect / WalletConnect Dark Mode Vendor Mode CashFusion Improved transaction history Improved stats dashboard Support for more fiat currencies To-Be-Announced Secret Project We are also opportunistically targeting these deliverables: Additional in-app utilities, such as address management, message signing, currency conversion, and more Continued improvement of our user manual; in-app help text Improvements and expansion of our website Integrations with other BCH products, such as BCH Bull, Moria USD, AfoG, etc. Improved i18n/translations platform Shareable Link Maps We say "opportunistically" because we don't want to over-promise and under-deliver, but also want to be transparent about our current goals and focus areas. Monetization Strategies We don't intend to survive on fundraisers indefinitely. As Selene Wallet becomes more mature and stable, we are able to build more products and services under the Selene brand. In the short term, we're considering an optional "Donation Mode" in the wallet that will allow you to send a microdonation to the Selene team and your Electrum server provider every N transactions. We anticipate many users would happily enable this mode to support BCH developers, and this can provide a revenue stream that scales with user growth. Some observation and user feedback suggests that we should consider a NFT sale. We have plans to develop a Selene-focused token ecosystem in the future, but the details have not yet been finalized. As our userbase grows, so does our brand. We have new products in mind that uses our brand as leverage, but we are not ready to publicly reveal more at this time. Interested contributors may contact the developers directly for more information. Some of our future plans require expansion of our server infrastructure, which on their own can also provide potential sources of revenue, such as file hosting and data services. Breakdown of Costs Baseline Operating Costs: $26,604 / year (74 BCH) At a baseline, we have a minimum annual expenditure of $26,604 (~74 BCH). We must pay these expenses in order to operate. Administrative: $21,697 / year Michigan LLC Registration: $250 / year Business Mailing Address & Phone: $348 / year Apple Developer License: $99 / year Building costs (Kallisti Home/Office): $21,000 / year Infrastructure: $4907 / year Server costs: $1591 / year Domain names: $254 / year bch.ninja, kallisti.cash, kallisti.io, selene.cash, selene.technology, selenewallet.com, xulu.tech Email (2 domains): $50 / year xulu.tech, kallisti.io Internet and Cellular: $1440 / year Energy Costs: $1572 / year ($131/mo average) Travel: 13 BCH ($4810) We must consider the expenditures involved with traveling to various conferences and events. Last year, we anticipated travel funding to come from Kallisti's discretionary income. Budgeting constraints toward the end of 2024 unfortunately prohibited attendance for the BCH Argentina conference. In order to continue attending key events, this year we will directly allocate funds for travel. We are confident that our attendance is delivering positive impact and visibility for the Selene and BCH brands. At the BTC conference in Nashville, Tennessee last year, Kallisti was able to give everyone on-the-ground insight into the conference, as well as interview with Fox News, giving an excellent promotion opportunity for Selene and BCH. We followed up with Steve Thurmond, who strategically teamed up with Kallisti in Nashville to make sure BCH had maximum impact at the conference. Likewise, this month Kallisti and Jeremy attended the BTC OP_NEXT conference in Tysons, Virginia, which brought immediate visibility to Selene and BCH from some of Bitcoin (BTC)'s most influential and respected community members. Our goal is to continue representing Bitcoin Cash positively by having a physical preference in Bitcoin and crypto spaces. BCH BLISS: $1934 Ticket: $150 Air Travel: ~$1200 (1 passenger, economy, round trip) Hotel: ~$584 (at venue, 4 nights) BTC Las Vegas: $1586 Ticket: Free Open Source Pass Air Travel: ~$200 (1 passenger, economy, round trip) Hotel: ~$1386 (at venue, 4 nights) OP_NEXT: $1290 Ticket: $250 Air Travel: ~$700 (1 passenger, economy, round trip) Hotel: $340 (3 nights) At the time of writing, there is not any other major travel anticipated. If there is another conference in Argentina, we'd like to consider attending, as Argentina has our 2nd-largest userbase by country. We will likely run an additional small fundraiser if this is the case. There are other US/Canada events, such as Ryan Giffin's Florida meetup, and Jerry's Toronto meetup that we would like to attend if able. Developer Compensation: 333.5 BCH ($120,060) Kallisti - full time development, user support, infrastructure management, business management, engineering management, product management: 194 BCH ($69,840) The median income for experienced software engineers in Kallisti's area is $101,342 Subtracting the Baseline Operating Costs and Travel Costs, $69,928 (~194 BCH) remains in discretionary income for Kallisti This is the opportunity cost of working full-time on a project I love, and is also the opportunity cost for the community to keep me from seeking a traditional development job in my city. Jeremy - part time development, user support, business management, marketing management, 'investor' relations, product management: 97 BCH ($34,920) We price Jeremy's contributions at roughly half the amount of Kallisti's, reflecting his capacity for involvement while also working on the Bitcoin Cash Podcast and BCH Bliss, which have their own funding outside of Selene. Jeremy provides critical support for Kallisti, sharing equal responsibility in business and product development, and having done most of the outreach for our additional development and funding contributors. This round of funding is intended to position Jeremy for full-time work exclusively in the BCH ecosystem. Budget for additional developers, paid on a per-ticket basis: 32.5 BCH ($11,700) We consider the cost it would take to pay one developer for 6 weeks of work, using the same rate as Kallisti. $101,342 / 52 weeks = $1948.88 / week; $11,693.28 for 6 weeks (~32.5 BCH) We already have developers on standby who have contributed excellent work. We would like to continue working with them. One-time commission for CashFusion development: 10 BCH ($3600) We have a developer on standby who has the qualifying expertise to properly implement CashFusion. We have negotiated a 10 BCH payment for completion of the CashFusion feature. Infrastructure Expansion: ~$1300 / year (~3.5 BCH) Additional high speed block storage for Chaingraph: ~$1200/year (~3.333 BCH) (1TB @ ~$100/TB/month) Additional object storage for IPFS and other services: ~$100/year (~0.3 BCH) (1TB @ ~$9/TB/month) Kallisti has been hosting critical and reliable BCH infrastructure since 2021 at bch.ninja. Electrum provider for Selene Wallet, Electron Cash, Stack Wallet, Mainnet-JS (Cashonize, Tapswap, et al), etc. One of three chipnet miners Performant, high-availability Mainnet and Chipnet blockchain explorers (sickpig explorers) High-reliability p2p peer for other BCH nodes (Fast) Storage is biggest resource need We want to expand to provide Chaingraph, IPFS, and other services Sale of digital services and infrastructure access is a potential revenue generator Progress Tracking and Feedback Our GitLab milestone and issue trackers can be used to follow our progress: Development board: https://git.xulu.tech/selene.cash/selene-wallet/-/boards/2 Feedback board: https://git.xulu.tech/selene.cash/selene-wallet/-/boards/4 Issue tracker: https://git.xulu.tech/selene.cash/selene-wallet/-/issues/ Milestone tracker: https://git.xulu.tech/selene.cash/selene-wallet/-/milestones Updates will always be published to our Twitter: https://twitter.com/SeleneWallet If you’d like to share your thoughts about Selene Wallet with us, send an email to feedback@selene.cash or talk to us on Telegram at https://t.me/SeleneWallet!
